The National Grid Foundation Teaching Green Institute

Grant and Institute Background
ÂÜÀòÉç and the National Grid Foundation continue an innovative institute that was founded in 2011: The ÂÜÀòÉç: National Grid Foundation Teaching Green Institute (TGI). TGI is designed to train middle school and high school teachers in environmental issues and to provide suggestions on incorporating environmentally focused curricula into their classrooms.

ÂÜÀòÉç, already well-known for its expertise in teacher training, will tap its Sustainability Institute staff to act as guest lecturers to supplement education and science professors for TGI. The instructors will focus on such topics as global warming and its local challenges, clean energy solutions on Long Island and reducing toxins in your daily environment.

The Institutes may be taken as a 3 credit graduate course or on a non-credit basis. The institutes offered in 2026 will cover new topics not covered in the 2025 institutes.

Scholarships
We will offer up to 45 scholarships ranging from full scholarships to partial scholarships. Special consideration will be given to teachers from underserved communities, from schools/districts in need of improvement or from low-moderate income communities. The program will be open to public and private school teachers on Long Island, Brooklyn, Staten Island and parts of Queens as well as some upstate communities served by National Grid.

Teaching Green Institute Descriptions and Schedule for 2026
Two Teaching Green Institutes will be offered this summer on the following schedule:

Summer 2

July 6-9

TGI High School Eric Powers; EDU 5900 15, Suffolk in person *NEW

July 13-16

Powering Sustainability Paul Zaratin, EDU 5900 14, asynchronous *NEW

 Please note that the institutes offered this year will cover new topics not covered in the 2024 institutes.

Tuition and Fees, Application and Registration Procedures

The tuition and fees for a 3-credit course is about $4,000. ÂÜÀòÉç will discount the tuition and the National Grid Foundation - Teaching Green Institute will provide grants ranging from $945 to $315 per teacher. 

The tuition and fees for 2 in-service credits is  $695. The National Grid Foundation - Teaching Green Institute will provide grants ranging from $495 to $300 per teacher. 

We have been approved for 2026! 

Applications will be accepted starting on April 20, 202 and will continue until June 4, 2026 (if seats are still available). Teachers will be notified of their acceptance in the program and their scholarship amount starting on May 20, 2026 by email.  Please note: special consideration will be given to teachers who come from schools with a 25% or higher free/reduced lunch percentage, schools/districts in need of improvement, districts/schools with a high minority population and/or schools/districts in low-moderate income communities.

Special consideration will also be given to teachers in one of the above categories who have not been given a TGI grant in the past.  To help insure that we have teachers from as many LI school districts as possible we are limiting, for the time being, the number of teachers from one district to (2) two teachers. However, teachers should still apply for the grant even if more than (2) two teachers have applied from their district.  If by June 4, 2026 we still have scholarships available, we will award those scholarships to teachers who are on the waiting list, regardless of the number of scholarships that have been awarded to a particular district.
